    Make a Lavendar Eye Pillow

You know when a good friend tells you about something, a new product or thing, and you’re kindof skeptical but you trust that person’s judgement so you decide to try it? That’s exactly how this eye pillow came to be. I was skeptical that a pillow filled with flax seed and lavender would do anything for me, and would be just another thing to take up space in a drawer of forgotten things.

But when a friend says, “try it” you try it.

    But first, I researched 🙂

I found that these little pillows are more than a superfluous au natural thing. They actually have real benefits:

    1. The flax seed filling is just the perfect weight to put light pressure on my eyelids and forehead muscles, which I found causes them to relax. I found this especially beneficial for bringing relief to my eyes and vision after many hours of screentime.
    2. The aromatics or essential oils you can add, has their own healing properties over and above the flax seed.

You can put them in the freezer or microwave, too. Overall, putting these over my eyes for 5 minutes just feels SO GOOD!

I’ll also add that these are really fast to sew up (and using scraps if you have them), and make sweet gifts or possible things to sell.

Ok, ready to make one? Let’s do it!

    What you’ll need:

3/4 cup of whole flax seed (you can test different amounts to change the weight of your pillow, but I found 3/4 cup to be perfect)

    5-6 spoonfuls of dried Lavender

a few drops of essential oils added to the lavender, optional

**What I had on hand was organic, which I’d recommend! You can also make these just using flax seed and omit the herbs altogether if you just want the weighted feel with no scent. You can substitute the lavender for chamomile, peppermint, or any other dried herb you’d like. I happen to LOVE lavender.**

    1 – 8.5″ x 8.5″ square of fabric OR 2 – 8.5 x 4.5″ pieces of fabric

**I used an incredible soft double gauze and it’s perfect. You could also use silk, or soft cotton lawn, soft jersey knits, etc.

    How to make it:

Fold your 8.5″ square in half and sew the three raw edged sides using a 1/4″ seam allowance and leaving a 2″ opening on one side.

**If you use two pieces of fabric, you’ll sew around all 4 cut edges, leaving a 2″ opening.

Clip the corners to reduce bulk.

    Turn inside out.

Using either a funnel or rolled up paper like I used, fill your pillow with the flax seed and lavender.

Using a small slip stitch, hand sew your opening closed.

Gently massage or toss your pillow to mix the flax and lavender.

Lay down flat, take several deep belly breaths, exhale through your mouth, and then place your eye pillow over your forehead and eyes….and relaxxxxxx!

That’s it. That’s all there is to it. You could embellish your pillow with a little embroidery which I will do for any of these that I make as gifts, just to make them extra special.
